School Councils

Limestone Learning Foundation

School Councils are important partners in education. School Councils provide a forum through which parents and other members of school communities can contribute to improving student achievement and well-being and enhance the accountability of the education system. The Board values the role and contribution of our School Council members and their commitment to help boost parent involvement and serve as an ongoing mechanism for effective two-way communication and consultation between the school and the school community.

School
Councils help:

  • empower and support parent involvement and engagement in our schools;

  • represent and seek parent voice in Ministry and school board consultations;

  • increase, facilitate and support communication between parents and the school board;

  • provide opportunities for parents to develop useful skills to support their student; and

  • act as a resource for parents and school councils on parent engagement and involvement.

School Council goals should represent parent feedback, teacher input and school administration priorities. Focus should be placed on the following priorities as identified by the Board:

Community Building: Offering activities/events to help build a strong sense of school community and encourage parent engagement will enable your school to work toward overarching goals, as a team.

Academics: Offering activities that will enhance student achievement and support curriculum goals and include parents as partners in education.

Partnerships: Including student council, community groups, donors and other schools and their councils with regard to networking, sharing ideas and resources.

In our efforts to strengthen the partnership between schools and School Councils, Limestone has developed, with input from parents, a tool kit to guide and assist School Councils throughout the year. Please visit the School Council Tool Kit to learn more.

School Councils also provide representation on the LDSB Parent Involvement Committee, which supports school communities by serving as an advisory group, and providing a forum where educational topics and issues are investigated with a focus on parent engagement.

The Limestone District School Board is situated on traditional territories of the Anishinaabe & Haudenosaunee.
