Spring Literacy Tutors

Limestone Learning Foundation

Each May and June, the Limestone District School Board offers a literacy tutoring program at all secondary schools and at selected elementary schools. This program is designed to support students in Grades 7-9 who require remedial literacy support.

The principal, in partnership with Student Services and Student Success teachers, identify students who would benefit from this additional learning opportunity. Literacy tutors work one-on-one with students who require support with the development of their reading and writing skills.

Students are removed from regular classes one to three times per week for half-hour literacy appointments with a tutor. Tutors will work on specific reading and writing strategies to enable success in students’ course work, as well as on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), which is a secondary school graduation requirement.

The literacy tutoring sessions will be tailored to each student’s specific needs. These sessions will not only emphasize the skills necessary to successfully complete the OSSLT, but will also help to develop critical literacy skills that are transferrable to all courses.
