KASSAA return to play
Posted on 09/24/2021
The Limestone District School Board recognizes the important role that extra-curricular sport activities play in the lives of students. The board has worked closely with its partners at KFL&A Public Health (KFLAPH), the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association (KASSAA) and the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) to develop plans and protocols to help ensure a safe return-to-sport for everyone.

The board is pleased to announce that Limestone secondary school fall athletic teams will return to competition beginning on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, following protocols to reduce the potential exposure to COVID-19. This currently includes golf, field hockey, football, volleyball, and basketball. Players, volunteer staff coaches, community volunteers, and officials must follow KASSAA safety protocols, including daily COVID-19 screening. Some safety protocols are specific to each sport. Players will be provided with this information and will include actions before, during, and after play. Failure to adhere to the protocols could result in removal from a game and/or the season. Additional measures could be introduced by the board or public health depending on local circumstances and data.

We know that families enjoy attending sports games and events to support and cheer on their students. At this time, however, spectators are NOT permitted at any indoor event whether it is inside a Limestone school, ALCDSB school, or other facility.  We are also asking that spectators consider not attending outdoor events either. We know it is tempting to attend outdoor activities which are generally much safer than those held indoors. However, we are taking every step we can to ensure a safe space for student athletes. This includes limiting spectators to ensure students athletes have as few contacts as possible, and to assist with accurate contact tracing should a positive case occur. Given the excitement of student athletes and coaches for the upcoming season, it would be very disappointing to see the fall season jeopardized.

If families must attend outdoor events (to pick up students), we ask that you remain in your vehicles. If you must exit your vehicle, please ensure you are masked, avoid congregating, and maintain a safe two-metre distance from other student athletes and staff.

We appreciate your ongoing patience and understanding. By working together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for student athletes. This is not a return to normal and we must all do what we can to ensure these activities can continue.  We hope these measures will be short-lived, and that we can return to a more typical experience when it becomes possible.

The Limestone District School Board is situated on traditional territories of the Anishinaabe & Haudenosaunee.
