Updated March 15, 2021:

KFL&A Public Health has notified the school board that a second student at Winston Churchill Public School tested positive for COVID-19 on March 15, 2021. The first student tested positive on March 13, 2021.

Following further investigation, it has been determined that this second case poses no risk to students or staff. As such, no further class cohorts will be required to isolate at this time and the school will remain open. One class cohort and one bus cohort that were isolating are permitted to return to school Tuesday, March 16, 2021 provided they pass daily COVID-19 screening. One cohort related to the first positive case will remain in isolation at home and follow directives from Public Health. These families have already been advised.

Instances when a positive case in a school poses no risk to the school include:

  • The case is learning or teaching virtually and has not been in the school.
  • The case was already isolating and not attending school because they were previously identified as a close contact of a case.
  • The case was not present at the school when they were infectious.

Because Variants of Concern (VOC) are now present in our community, and they have the ability to spread more easily than typical COVID-19 cases, a more aggressive isolation and contact tracing approach was taken given new developments in the investigation.

One class cohort that was asked to re-isolate Monday, March 15, 2021 and one previously dismissed bus cohort identified as contacts of contacts of a positive COVID-19 VOC have both been cleared to return to school Tuesday, March 16, 2021 provided they pass daily COVID-19 screening.

Affected members of the school community have been notified. At this time, the school remains open. In the interests of maintaining privacy, the board will not identify people that have received positive COVID-19 tests.

The school and board continue to work with KFL&A Public Health to protect all members of the school community to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

In accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines, the board has posted the date, school/site location, and number of positive confirmed cases on its website. The board will continue to follow the directions of KFL&A Public Health who has the responsibility to manage confirmed cases of COVID-19, including what happens if an outbreak is declared.

As always, the health and safety of students, staff and the school community remain our priority. Public health and the school board appreciate the understanding and patience of the school community, and their ongoing support of public health directives intended to keep everyone safe.
