Statement re EQAO Grade 9 Math Assessment
Posted on 01/09/2020
Image of student filling in a test paperThe Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) has withdrawn some services as part of its work-to-rule job action. As a result, OSSTF teachers will not participate in EQAO testing including the administration of the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment originally scheduled for later this month.

In Limestone, the EQAO Grade 9 Math Assessment has historically been included as part of the student’s final summative grade, which forms part of their overall mark in the course. To accommodate the withdrawal of services for EQAO, Grade 9 students will instead write a math exam/summative and each secondary school will directly notify students and families of the revised plan for end-of-semester evaluations.  If parents/guardians have any questions, please feel free to connect with your child’s teacher, or contact the school.

All Ontario students who are enrolled in a Grade 9 applied or Grade 9 academic mathematics course are normally required to take the EQAO Grade 9 Math Assessment. In a statement issued on January 8, the Minister of Education said that students who do not take the EQAO Grade 9 Math Assessment in January will need to take the test in June.

The logistics of administering a make-up test to students who are not studying math in semester 2 does pose significant logistical challenges. The Board awaits further direction from the Ministry and EQAO regarding a make-up test for semester 1 students. We will share new information with affected students and families as it becomes available.
