The Crystal Ball Sparkling Success for the Limestone Learning Foundation
The K-Rock Centre was transformed into a glittering ballroom on Saturday, October 15th as it hosted a star-studded evening in support of The Limestone Learning Foundation, featuring a solo/acoustic performance by Juno-award winning artist, Sarah Harmer.
A sold-out crowd of seven hundred guests gathered for this black tie evening on the floor of the K-Rock Centre arena, where they were treated to an evening highlighted by a gourmet meal and star-studded entertainment including Rob Baker, Emily Fennell, Chris Koster, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair performing together with students from the Limestone District School Board.
The leadership, artistic vision, and tireless energy of Gala Co-Chairs Joanne Langlois and Trudy McKeown were paramount to the magical experience of the Crystal Ball. Together with a dynamic lead team of Pamela Hart, Barbara Hammond, Cathy Carson, and Q-Design a breath-taking atmosphere that will be reflected upon for years to come was created. Watching Limestone students thrive with such confidence and to know that they have been given the opportunity to explore and enhance their learning... it truly doesn't get much better than this!
Accounts are still being finalized at this time, but the LLF Board of Directors is projecting a net profit in excess of $100,000 from sponsorships, ticket sales, and auction items. Truly, a record-breaking event!
Congratulations and a million thanks to all of the students who displayed their projects, performed and entertained, and to our professional musicians and hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and guests, our sincere thanks, the Crystal Ball was truly an amazing, and magical evening.

In Memory ...
~ Thanasi Koutroumbas ~
~ Taylor Allan ~
It is always a terrible tragedy when a young person passes away and there are never the right words to express the great sadness we all feel at a life never fully realized. Sometimes, it is possible to see some good come from such a tragic event.
It is with sincere gratitude that we thank two families who have recently established memorial funds in memory of a child they have lost in order to provide for bursaries so that other students might pursue their post-secondary education.
The Limestone Learning Foundation is accepting donations in memory of:
Thanasi Koutroumbas who lost his life in a car accident on August 12, 2010. Thanasi was a graduate of KCVI.
Taylor Allan who passed away from cardiac arrhythmia, April 2008 at the age of 16. Taylor was in Gr.11 at LaSalle SS.
If you would like to contribute a memorial gift to either of these bursaries, you can make your tax-deductible donation simply by clicking on the "Donate Now" button at the top right-hand side of this page
Thank you

Thanks to the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association
On November 30th 2010, Kevin Hart from Doug's Auto Parts, informed us that the Limestone Learning Foundation will again receive an incredible early Christmas gift - a cheque for $10,000 on behalf of the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association which represents members of the auto recycling industry across the province.
The OARA works with other associations and governments to address best practices and future solutions regarding waste oil, CFCs, mercury switches, scrap tires, etc. in order to reduce the environmental impact of wrecked or salvaged vehicles. Through their participation in the "Retire Your Ride" program, an initiative of the federal government and the Clean Air Foundation (now Summerhill) aimed at removing older, high-polluting vehicles from the road, OARA member auto recycling businesses contribute towards a special fund which is then used to make donations to local charities for worthy projects, especially those which support and promote alternative energy, transportation, and improving air quality. The $10,000 donation to the LLF will be used to support innovative enhanced "green", alternative transportation/alternative energy learning projects for students in Limestone District schools. The LLF will award the $10,000 to "green" learning projects in 2011 to help Limestone students understand and explore
alternative, sustainable energy strategies which will positively impact our environmental footprint.
We thank Doug's Auto Parts and the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association for their generous support of "Excellence in Education"!

~ In Memory ... Barry C. O'Connor ~
(Letter to the Editor / Kingston Whig Standard, February 13, 2010)
It was with great sadness that, on Feb. 8th, we learned of the passing of Barry O’Connor, Retired Director of Education for the Limestone District School Board. Barry has left an indelible imprint on the minds and lives of countless students and colleagues who he touched in so many ways.
We are particularly saddened because the Limestone Learning Foundation was born of Barry’s Vision and so, we have lost a close friend and valued leader. Barry, along with a handful of like-minded individuals, believed that the Limestone District School Board should be more than an “average” school board. He believed that the creativity of our educators should be cultivated and encouraged in order to provide innovative learning opportunities which would enhance what was already being taught in the classroom. He believed that students learn in different ways and, for some, a “hands-on” experiential approach would engage them more effectively, offering them more opportunity for success. He believed that, as a community, we should invest in the future of our students as this was an
investment which was guaranteed to produce huge returns.
As a result, the Limestone Learning Foundation – one of the first of its kind in Canada - was created in 1999 as the charitable arm of the Limestone District School Board. Its mandate was to raise funds which would be used specifically to support innovative, creative enhanced learning projects developed by teachers at schools across the Limestone district in the areas of Literacy & Numeracy, Science & Technology, the Arts, and Innovative Practices. This funding, available from no other source, would support the “margin of excellence” which would help ensure that the Limestone Board was more than an “average” school board. In just ten years, the Foundation has provided more than one million dollars in funding to over 420 such innovative projects in which thousands of elementary and
secondary students have participated. This incredible success is due in large measure to the clarity of Barry’s Vision – a Vision which the LLF continues to enthusiastically embrace.
We are aware of the numerous and important accomplishments in Barry’s life as an educator, leader, mentor, and coach. His role in the founding and the success of the Limestone Learning Foundation is a fitting tribute and will continue to benefit thousands of students for years to come. So, we say goodbye, dear friend, you will be missed, but your Vision lives on.
The Board of Directors
Limestone Learning Foundation
