School Board Trustees are elected officials responsible for the public schools of our community. They form a critical link between the community and the School Board.
Trustees are elected by public school taxpayers every four years, during municipal elections. The current Board will serve until November 30, 2018. The next Municipal and School Board Election will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018. Candidates will be able to register their nomination forms with clerks at their municipal office beginning Tuesday, May 1, 2018, until Friday, July 27, 2018, at 2 p.m. There are a number of excellent resources available through the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association. The Ontario government has complete information and provides a 2018 Candidates guide for Ontario school board and municipal council elections.
Individual trustees may bring any question, concern or suggestion to a Board meeting for discussion by trustees but only through Board resolution can action be taken. Individual trustees do not exercise authority or direct staff.
The functions of the Board include:
- Formulating and interpreting policies and by-laws;
- Delegating administrative authority;
- Deciding on educational and budget matters that cannot be legally delegated or that the in the Board's judgment should be decided by the Board;
- Appraising the District's education, administrative and planning processes in light of the Board's stated goals;
- Administering public funds; and
- Communicating with the citizens of Limestone for the benefit of the education of its children.
The Board also has two Student Trustees who serve one-year terms and are elected by the Limestone District Inter-School Student Council. Student Trustees may discuss policy and vote but the votes are non-binding.
Responsibility for day-to-day operations are delegated to Senior Staff to the administrative, teaching and support staff of the district.
Student Trustees
The Limestone District School Board hosts an InterSchool Council that is comprised of student representatives from all secondary schools within the district to provide a student voice to our School Board. Students at individual schools have the opportunity to bring forward suggestions at the Board level via two elected Student Trustees who participate in monthly Board meetings alongside the elected Board Trustees. One rural and one urban Student Trustee run the Interschool Council meetings. Student Trustees are permitted to vote at Board meeting, however, their votes are non-binding.
Traditionally, Student Trustees have been elected from within the membership of Inter-School Council. Beginning in April 2014, the position of Student Trustee will be open to all senior students of the Limestone District School Board who meet the eligibility criteria listed on the Student Trustee Application Form. This change in policy extends the candidacy to not only the
highest two ranking officials of the respective school student council, but to any senior student in Grade 10 or 11, and returning Grade 12 students. |
