The Board approved the draft design concept for the new intermediate and secondary school in December 2015. This design requires that the existing Queen Elizabeth Collegiate & Vocational Institute (QECVI) building be demolished at the end of the 2015-2016 school year to allow for construction to tentatively begin in the fall or winter of 2016.
To facilitate the demolition of QECVI, students will be relocated to either Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute (KCVI) or Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute (LCVI) for the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. All current (2015-2016) QECVI students (those in Grades 10 to 12 next school year) will go to LCVI in September 2016. Students in the KCVI and QECVI catchment areas entering Grade 9 will be placed at KCVI in September 2016. QECVI Focus programs will also be relocated to other Limestone schools.
Board staff are working with affected students, families and staff to ensure as smooth a transition as possible. This transition plan best addresses the need to ensure continuity of programming and supports for students, keep classmates together as much as possible, and minimize the displacement of students and staff.
The Board aims to have the new intermediate and secondary school open for the fall of 2018. That timing could shift depending on logistics and construction considerations.
