The LDSB has begun working through the process to determine the new school year calendar for 2010—2011. School boards are required to prepare, approve, and submit to the Ministry of Education, on or before May 1st of each year, the school year calendar to be followed in the next school year.
The regular school year is the period between September 1 and June 30. The three largest Boards in the Tri-Board Transportation Consortium (LDSB, Hastings Prince Edward District School Board and Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board) have traditionally agreed upon a common calendar in order to share transportation costs. Facilitated by the
Assistant to the Director, the LDSB School Year Calendar Stakeholder Committee provides input and votes on a calendar schedule. Stakeholders involved with this committee represent the following groups: trustees, parents, unions, federations, non-union employee groups, Human Resources, and administrators.
LDSB, along with Hastings and Algonquin, hosted a community forum on the school year calendar on January 6. The purpose of the evening was two-fold: to provide an opportunity for the school boards to explain the process and regulations they must follow to establish a school year calendar; and to receive input from the community on how the school year calendar
affects them. In addition, parents have been invited to give input on the calendar.
All members of the Consortium meet to reach consensus regarding the calendar, and discuss the pros and cons of various ideas and proposals. A common draft calendar is then taken by each Board’s representative to their respective Boards for approval. It is anticipated that a draft calendar will be presented to Limestone Trustees in April 2010.
