Support Programs
The Limestone District School Board offers several support programs that promote literacy skills development among our students.
DLC
The DLC (District Literacy Community) is a cross-panel, after-school book study that meets one Tuesday per month, facilitated by elementary
and secondary program consultants for literacy. Teacher-participants volunteer.
LLIFT
Our LLIFT (Language Literacy Instruction Focus Team) initiative began in the 2008-2009 school year. It offers targeted literacy instruction support to teachers of students enrolled in junior, applied-level English and social sciences courses at selected secondary schools, as well as to grade eight teachers at selected elementary schools. This initiative is co-led by elementary and secondary literacy consultants.
REMEDIAL LITERACY
The Ministry of Education's remedial literacy initiative is a ten-hour program offered outside of the instructional day, available to all secondary schools in the district. A minimum number of 10 grade 9 or 10 students is required to run the program.
SECONDARY LITERACY COMMITTEE
This Board-wide committee is comprised of student success teachers, literacy committee members, and an administrator from each secondary school. Members meet throughout the school year to plan school-based literacy action plans, and to share the progress of their implementation.
SPRING LITERACY
Limestone's Spring Literacy program is offered to all secondary schools. As part of this program, trained university students are assigned to schools to provide targeted literacy support to students in grades nine and ten, throughout the months of May and June.
SUMMER LITERACY
The Limestone District School Board offers two-week literacy courses, available at different points in the summer, in which students in grades 7-12 enroll and for which students receive a half-credit in guidance.
