Skills Competition 2012

The annual Limestone Skills Competition is the first of many Skills events designed to draw attention to our student’s passion for learning while showcasing the skills they are acquiring in a field of their choosing. The Limestone Competition is an excellent Reach Ahead activity where students can demonstrate their talent and creativity in a test against peers and sector related judging criteria. Students are given specific tasks to perform or scenarios to complete within a predetermined time frame that will be evaluated by a variety of industry specialists or post-secondary judges. Culinary Arts, Desktop Publishing, Photography and Prepared Speech are just a few of the more than 30 skills related, innovative events that students will compete in during the 10th annual Limestone Skills Competition. Once again the majority of the events will take place at St. Lawrence College along with three additional LDSB sites on Wednesday, April 04th, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The exciting partnership between the Limestone District School Board, SLC and the many skills sectors continues to grow as more than 300 elementary and secondary students will demonstrate their talents under the watchful eye of industry experts and college level judges.

The focus of the competition is to provide a post-secondary atmosphere that will challenge student thinking and engage a higher level of skill needed as they seek further education or training in an area of interest or emerging need.  Once again this year the competition will include several elementary challenges like the Green Design event that will test student interest in renewable or recyclable materials and will be back dropped by the Energy House at St. Lawrence College. Elementary robotics as well as all the familiar competitions such as, Hairstyling, Hospitality and Cabinetmaking will be held in the south block of St. Lawrence College while Fashion Design, Desktop publishing and Graphic Design will be in the new Link building.

All events will occur on the same day with the exception of team Home Building which will require two days as well three satellite locations will now be used to accommodate the addition of Auto Service at LCVI, Auto Paint at NDSS and Baking which will be hosted by Bayridge Secondary.

Many of the secondary winners will advance directly to the provincial competition in Kitchener Waterloo April 29th – May 02, 2012, which will also host the elementary Lego Challenges. Skills Ontario / Canada
For secondary events in the following areas: 2D Character Computer Animation, Culinary Arts, Individual Carpentry, Small Powered Equipment, TV & Video Production, and Welding an additional Regional qualifier will be required at St. Lawrence College on April 14th, 2012.
