Certification and Training
Sector specific skills training and best practice workshops leading to accredited certificates can be earned by students in the Limestone District School Board. The certificates are available in a variety of subject areas taken directly from industry standards and are recognized as “external” to the traditional curriculum being offered in the classroom. Specific technical training or enhanced arts recognition will compliment a student`s pathway choice matching a post-secondary destination or a workplace specific safety requirement.
Workshops can add value to a student`s portfolio, enhance their curriculum experience, fine tune a skill set or introduce a new process or piece of equipment not otherwise available to a student in a regular school setting. Training that leads to certification will be delivered in cooperation with an outside organization, therefore students participating may be asked to travel to a community based location or to expect very specific timeframes outside of the regular school day. The workshop itself may be delivered in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Construction Safety Association, Young Workers Awareness, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema Television and Radio Artista or other related professional affiliations.
In addition students taking part in expanded opportunities such as the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) or some Cooperative Education (Coop) programs may find some certification is a required element of the work experience.
The SHSM requirements for certification and training recognized and recommended by each sector are described in the sector-specific guides and are available to students. This component of the SHSM enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills related to safe work habits and sector-specific best practices.
Students earning sector-recognized certifications and training have an advantage when applying for and entering the workforce or post-secondary institutions.
