Literacy
Literacy is one of the pillars of student success. Because teachers across all disciplines care about the success of their students, all teachers have begun to identify themselves as teachers of literacy. The Ministry of Education has produced an extraordinarily useful series of resources, entitled Think Literacy, that can assist all teachers with the adoption of explicit literacy instruction within their courses, regardless of subject area. These subject-specific resources are available at:
In large part, these resources are useful because the tools and strategies found within endorse a teaching methodology in which literacy instruction is simultaneously embedded within the lesson, and explicitly modelled by the teacher. This creates a culture of learning and teaching that promotes a model of life-long literacy skills development for the students, rather than one that promotes a teach-to-the-test approach to instruction and learning.
