The following are excerpts from the Ontario Modern Language Teachers Association brochure, Languages For Life - What are the benefits of learning a second language?
....Research confirms that knowledge of a second language strengthens first-language skills and that the ability to speak two or more languages generally enhances problem-solving and reasoning skills, the capacity for creative thinking, and the ability to respect and understand other cultures. Second language learning strengthens students' ability to communicate and participate effectively in the workplace and the global community. It also increases their ability to understand themselves and other people, and helps them to appreciate the power of words and the many different uses of language.
Enhanced Career Choices
As the job market undergoes significant change, employers will increasingly look for candidates who not only have a second language, but who have the generic job skills that the study of language develops.
The study of languages can provide the following career benefits:
• a valuable edge . . . in the private and public sectors, including trade and industry, science and technology, travel and tourism, banking, public relations, arts and media, government and politics, law, education and research, and social services.
"In summary, the ability to read and understand French is unquestionably a distinct advantage in any organization with a pan-Canadian scope, whether it is in business, government, education or in any other field. And if you can speak and write in French as well, so much the better, in the interests of fairness, equality and mutual understanding among both language groups in our officially bilingual country."
