Families Assisting Students Achieving (FASA)
The Family Literacy Program has been developed to further support Limestone District School Board's Early Literacy initiative and to continue to build a partnership with parents. It is a program that is meant to support and extend the excellent literacy practices of the classroom by introducing these practices to parents. The program acknowledges the wonderful literacy skills that families already have in place and allows an opportunity for sharing ideas about how to make literacy fun and meaningful.
Focus Group:
The program is primarily for parents or guardians of children in Kindergarten to grade 3 for whom a remedial program has been recommended by the principal of the school. The children accompany the parents or guardians to each session.
Program Schedule & Overview:
The program runs for 4 sessions and each session is approximately 2 hours in length. The participating school determines the time and dates for the program and would then send out the information to the appropriate families. The topics covered during the sessions are as follows:
Helping Your Child With Letters and Sounds
Reading With Your Child
Working With Words With Your Child
Writing With Your Child
For each session, the teacher introduces the evening's topic and then models it with the children. Parents/Guardians would then have an opportunity to practise with their child with the support of the teacher. Each evening also has a Make and Take activity and a modelled Read-A-Loud. At the end of each evening, time is set aside for parents to ask questions about the session.
